Got Yeast? Check your Gallbladder Function!

Dear Natural Health Friends,

Many of you are working diligently to address yeast overgrowth (like Candida) and mold/mycotoxin exposure. Today, I want to shine a light on an often-overlooked hero in this process: your gallbladder.

Think of bile—stored and concentrated in the gallbladder—as your body's natural "soap." It’s the key to your own natural gut health! It plays a starring role in escorting fat-soluble toxins out:

  • For mold & mycotoxins: These stubborn, fat-loving toxins get processed by the liver into bile. A healthy gallbladder releases concentrated bile into the small intestine when you eat (especially fats), carrying those toxins away for elimination through your bowels. Sluggish bile flow (from "sludge" or buildup) can let toxins recirculate, contributing to ongoing symptoms. That's why supporting smooth bile flow is so key in mold recovery!
  • For yeast/Candida: Bile acids (especially secondary ones like deoxycholic and lithocholic acid) show direct antifungal power—they can inhibit Candida growth, block its invasive forms, disrupt biofilms, and help maintain balanced gut flora to prevent overgrowth.

Even if you've had your gallbladder removed (cholecystectomy), recovery is absolutely possible! The liver keeps producing bile—it just flows steadily instead of in bursts—so consistent use of binders and gentle daily support can help manage things effectively.

Natural ways to support this detox pathway (especially choline, digestive enzymes, and acid):

  • Choline (found in eggs, liver, or as phosphatidylcholine supplements) is crucial for producing healthy, fluid bile that keeps toxins moving out efficiently and helps prevent sludge buildup—vital during mold or yeast protocols.
  • Digestive enzymes (like Enzycore from Standard Process) aid in breaking down meals, signaling the gallbladder to release bile properly and supporting overall digestion so toxins don't linger.
  • Supporting stomach acid stimulates bile release and enzyme activation, creating a stronger "flush" for toxins and yeast (think Standard Process Zypan).

Add in cholagogue (meaning bile-promoting) herbs like dandelion, artichoke, or ginger to gently boost bile production and flow. Medi-Herb LivTon fits the bill here. Pair with binders to catch toxins in the gut and prevent reabsorption.

Your body is brilliantly designed to clear these burdens—supporting bile flow is one of the most empowering steps you can take.

If this resonates, try incorporating some of these simple supports and notice how your energy, digestion, and clarity shift. If you’re a patient, you are already supporting this process in a way that’s perfectly tailored for you!

I'd love to hear your experiences—reply and share what's worked for you!

Sincerely yours,
Laura Sheehan, MSACN

Hello everyone, The other day, a patient came in with a sick kid. Common occurrence. She asked me, “What do you do for a fever?” And I asked her, “What’s the purpose of a fever?” She said, “to burn up the infection”, or something along those lines. And yes, that’s one part of why your body raises a fever. Fevers decrease viral replication greatly, inhibit the reproduction of bacteria—but also have another effect that most people don’t know about. Calcium initiates the immune system response....

Dear Natural Health Friends, When I ask people about stress and how they handle it, they often mention exercise, reading, listening to music, or something like that. These things are all good! But they’re more of an escape or distraction from stress. These activities don’t address or handle the stress itself. And it is possible to do this. Let me explain: Dr. Sheehan’s Stress Story Years ago, I was massively stressed out and realized I had to do something about it. I had done a lot of...

Dear Natural Health Friends, Thyroid Issues? It’s a symptom. Constipation (often lifelong), skin issues, gut issues, weight gain, and low energy can all be signs of a thyroid issue lurking. The thyroid is a sensitive and reactive gland to the overall state of the body. It reacts to foods, hormone imbalances, and toxins. So, if your thyroid is low (or high)—the problem is coming from somewhere else. Taking medication can be necessary, but it’s not fixing the underlying problem. Here’s a crash...
