Leaky Gut: Why It Matters and What’s Breaking Your Gut Barrier

Dear Natural Health Friends,

Laura and I have been spending a lot of time lately studying what’s really going on with so many of the chronic health challenges we see in the office. One issue that keeps showing up is something often called “Leaky Gut” — or more accurately, a compromised gut barrier.

Your gut lining is meant to act like a smart, selective barrier. It lets in nutrients and keeps out toxins, undigested food particles, and harmful microbes. When that barrier becomes too permeable, it can trigger widespread inflammation and contribute to many common symptoms.

What is Dysbiosis and How Does It Connect?

Dysbiosis happens when there’s an imbalance in your microbiome (the community of bacteria and other microbes in your gut). This often includes:

  • Loss of microbial diversity
  • Loss of beneficial microbes (especially those that produce short-chain fatty acids that protect the gut)
  • Overgrowth of potentially harmful microbes (pathobionts)
  • Functional changes where the microbes are no longer doing their job properly

This imbalance can weaken the gut barrier and set off systemic inflammation.

What Breaks the Gut Barrier?

There are so many factors.

Several common factors can damage or increase permeability of the intestinal lining:

· Diet – Highly processed foods, food allergies/sensitivities, excess sugar, and low fiber

· Stress – Chronic stress directly alters gut permeability and immune function

· Medications – NSAIDs, Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), and especially antibiotics

· Toxins – Environmental chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial pollutants

· Infections – Viruses, bacteria, and fungi that can directly damage the gut lining

These triggers can lead to oxidative stress, low-grade inflammation, and disruption of the protective mucus layer and beneficial bacteria. Once the barrier is compromised, microbial components and toxins can slip into the bloodstream, activating the immune system and sometimes even affecting the brain (contributing to mood and cognitive changes through cytokine—inflammatory immune chemical—release).

The good news is that the body is incredibly resilient. When we support the gut properly — by removing triggers where possible and giving the body what it needs to heal — many people notice significant improvements in energy, digestion, skin, immunity, and overall well-being.

In our office, we use the detailed symptom survey, functional blood work analysis, and muscle testing to get a clear picture of what’s stressing your system and exactly what your body needs to restore balance. We’ve seen time and again how addressing the gut barrier can be a game-changer for people who have been struggling for years.

If you’ve been dealing with ongoing digestive issues, fatigue, brain fog, skin problems, allergies, or other chronic symptoms, a compromised gut barrier could be playing a bigger role than you realize.

We’d be happy to help you investigate this more deeply. Just reply to this email or call the office to schedule a visit. Laura and I are here to support you with a personalized, natural approach.

Wishing you strong digestion and vibrant health,
Dr. Keith Sheehan, DC

Dear Natural Health Friends, It’s been EIGHT YEARS since I wrote anything about bone broth, and by golly it’s time. One of the easiest ways to support gut health is with bone broth. I’m going to share with you how to make your own! This week I made a fresh batch, and it turned out beautifully. There’s something really satisfying about simmering bones all day and ending up with rich, healing broth you can drink or cook with for weeks. (Dr. Sheehan has been drinking 1-2 cups a day to help his...

Dear Natural Health Friends, Dr. Sheehan asked me what the email was going to be about this week. I told him I didn’t know. So, he left it up to me! I’m going to share about one of my favorite topics…baking! It’s going to be the weekend soon and of course I’m thinking about food. This Banana Cream Pie recipe is decadent and really scratches that itch for a rich dessert. The crust is perfect and the filling is just sweet enough. Make sure you have good gallbladder function (or AF Betafood...
