What Generation Pottenger Cat are You?

Hello everyone,

I had an interesting discussion with a patient recently about how so many more people have chronic illness at a much earlier age. She asked why that is, and what can she do about it? And something came to mind.

Years ago, I read about an experiment called "Pottenger’s Cats". This study was a well-documented study done between 1932 and 1942 and thus was very different than the studies that are performed today.

The “Pottenger’s Cats” study looked at different diets in cats and how it affected their health (specifically cats that had their adrenals removed—you can look up more details about the study here).

One group of cats was fed raw meat and milk, the second group was fed cooked meat and milk, and the third group was fed a mixture of raw and cooked food. The study followed the health of these cats for over five generations.

Spoiler alert: the cats fed cooked food mimicking today’s processed foods subsequently got sicker and sicker generation by generation, exhibiting problems like anxiety, depression, mental illness, arthritis, heart disease, and infertility, until the fifth generation could not reproduce.

If you look around, these health problems are the same problems that plague us today. The heavily processed foods started in the early 1900s, and so we are actually between third- and fifth-generation Pottenger’s people!

But take heart, all is not lost. Another conclusion could be drawn from this study—cats could return to good health (slowly, generation by generation), if they were returned to uncooked (unprocessed) diet. We have found that we can improve even quicker using the right supplements and whole foods concentrates, especially Standard Process supplements.

Here’s a link to the video about Dr. Pottenger’s study on YouTube. And, this is an interesting essay about raw vs. pasteurized milk by Dr. Pottenger. It’s fascinating to observe how these astute doctors could see the tide of chronic disease coming. Their observations are valuable, and many of their solutions and strategies still hold water (we still use them and they work!). Keep in mind, I don’t approve of experimenting on animals, but since this study was done almost 100 years ago, we can honor the lives that were lost by learning from their sacrifice for us.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Keith Sheehan

Dear Natural Health Friends, Have you noticed that not all nutritionists agree? Eat Meat Don’t Eat Meat Eat Vegetables Lectins Bad Eat Fat Don’t Eat Fat Etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.!!! I believe I have finally found that one thing all nutritionists can agree about. Processed foods. (Hint—they’re bad for you!) This video does a great job of breaking down the health effects of processed foods. The way we process our food is a major issue with the American food system. Dr. Melvin Page (remember...

Hello everyone, Did you know that each of us has two brains? If you’ve ever puzzled over human behavior (your own or others’), it may be helpful to explain this concept. There is a part of our brain that is a mystery to us. Most of the time, we go about our daily tasks, blissfully ignorant of its existence. Then suddenly, we become enraged (way too enraged) with the guy who cuts us off in traffic. Or make a dumb mistake that sets us way back in our schedule. Or maybe we blame our husband for...

Hello everyone, In natural health we have been aware for a long time that the mind can affect the body, physical symptoms, and healing in unexpected ways. There is definitely a link. What has not been quite as clear (at least to us) is exactly how this works and what to do about it. Traditionally, in our practice, we have left this aspect of health and healing to psychologists and counselors. After all, we are nutritionists! Still, in the back of our mind a question has been lurking. We have...
