Dear Natural Health Friends, In the world of natural health, we’re always seeking simple, time-tested ways to support our bodies’ incredible ability to heal and maintain balance. Today, I want to shine a spotlight on a powerful, often-overlooked root vegetable that’s making a well-deserved comeback: Spanish Black Radish (Raphanus sativus var. Niger). Yes, I Do Reach for the Radish Many times when I am helping a patient who is recovering from an infection or needs some lymph, liver, or gut support to round out their natural healing program, I reach for Spanish Black Radish. There are only five references for Spanish Black Radish on PubMed.com (there are many more for “Raphanus sativus”—the scientific name for radish), but the titles of the papers are impressive: Urinary Bladder Stone Passing Using a Persian Herbal Recipe To boil it down, Spanish Black Radish has been demonstrated in a mouse model, a line of human cells, and also in humans to promote detoxification. Spanish Black Radish even helped to clear the liver-toxic acetaminophen more quickly in healthy male volunteers. What is Spanish Black Radish? Also known as Black Spanish Radish or Erfurter radish, this heirloom cruciferous vegetable boasts a striking black skin, crisp white flesh, and a bold, peppery kick reminiscent of horseradish. Larger and more pungent than common red radishes, it has been utilized for centuries across cultures—from ancient Egypt, where it was considered sacred and fed to pyramid workers for energy and vitality, to Ayurvedic traditions and European folk medicine. Glucosinolates - Plant Chemical Goodness at Work Spanish Black Radish is nutrient-dense yet low in calories (around 20-30 kcal per serving). It delivers excellent amounts of vitamin C for immune support, potassium, fiber, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and unique phytonutrients. What truly sets it apart is its exceptionally high concentration of glucosinolates—four times more than many other cruciferous vegetables. These sulfur-containing compounds break down into bioactive metabolites like isothiocyanates (including Rapha satin), which drive many of its health-promoting effects. The presence of glucosinolate compounds could explain why Spanish Black Radish was helpful in the study I talked about—the volunteers who took Spanish Black Radish showed increased Phase I and Phase II liver detox. Digestive and Gallbladder Health As a classic “bitter,” Spanish Black Radish stimulates bile production and flow (choleretic and cholagogue actions). This aids fat digestion, nutrient absorption, and may help maintain healthy cholesterol levels by supporting bile’s role in cholesterol excretion. Traditional uses include relief for indigestion, gallbladder support, and even gallstone prevention—animal research shows it can help dissolve cholesterol-based gallstones. Its fiber and compounds also promote gut lining integrity, balance inflammation, and support a healthy microbiome. Many report reduced bloating and smoother digestion when incorporating Spanish Black Radish regularly. Antioxidant and Immune Boost Glucosinolate metabolites activate Nrf2 pathways, ramping up your body’s own antioxidant production. This combats oxidative stress and supports overall resilience. Additional benefits may include antimicrobial effects, blood sugar balance support, and anti-inflammatory actions—making it a versatile ally for modern lifestyles filled with environmental challenges. Feeling Adventurous? Try Adding Some Spanish Black Radish into Your Diet! You might try the following ideas to incorporate more radish into your life:
Start small if you’re sensitive to bitters—perhaps 1-2 servings a few times a week. Those with thyroid conditions, gallstones, or on medications should check with a healthcare provider first, as cruciferous veggies can interact in some cases. Spanish Black Radish reminds us that nature provides potent solutions rooted in tradition and validated by emerging science. By supporting detoxification, digestion, and antioxidant defenses, it empowers your body to do what it does best: maintain vibrant health from the inside out. Have you ever eaten Spanish Black Radish? How have Spanish Black Radish Tablets worked for you? We’d love to hear about your experience! Sincerely yours, Laura Sheehan, MSACN Natural Health Practitioner

Dear Natural Health Friends, Laura and I have been doing a deep dive lately into what makes people sick—and more importantly, what we can do to help the body heal and stay strong. One thing keeps coming up again and again: so many people are dealing with immune system challenges and disturbances in their microbiome. The Human Microbiome: Health Starts in the Gut The microbiome is the community of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms that live in and on our bodies—especially in...
Dear Natural Health Friends, High blood pressure is one of those things I see so often in practice. Many people come in feeling fine but discover their numbers are creeping up—or they’re already on medication and want natural ways to support their body better. The good news? There’s one simple, natural approach that keeps showing up as remarkably effective in the research—and it doesn’t require fancy equipment, long workouts, or even breaking a sweat. It’s called wall sits (or wall squats),...
Dear Natural Health Friends, The problem with the “information age” is that a lot of information just ends up being too much. I’m going to date myself—I remember when we first started using computers in my undergrad chemistry class. It took forever for me to figure them out! Then in chiropractic school, I mainly used word processing programs to take notes and share them with classmates. Back then, if you wanted solid information on a topic, you had to buy a VHS tape, pick up a book, head to...
